After a few days in tourist areas, we’re back to the real projects — the rural realities, the stories I truly love.
This is the first of three days we’ll spend with Treedom Tanzania. With us are Paul, Lenana, and Gabriel, explaining every step of their work. Treedom’s work is easy to explain but powerful in its impact: they collaborate with local reforestation partners — in this case, Matonyok — to plant fruit trees.
These trees not only absorb CO₂ and help the environment, but they also produce fruit that can be sold, creating a sustainable economy where before there was none. It’s a win-win. Today we met a farmer who used to grow only maize and potatoes. Now, thanks to avocado and papaya trees, he has significantly increased his income — and even created jobs for others, who help with harvesting and selling the fruit. Even Our Discovery Travel has its own forest on Treedom.
That’s where all the trees we plant through our Tembo and Twiga crowdfunding campaign will go. Tomorrow we’ll visit more farmers, discover more stories, and meet more people. This is what I love about our journeys. Right now, we’re at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, 1700 meters above sea level — and it’s really cold. Tomorrow’s daytime lows are expected to be around 10–11°C. Tomorrow night we’ll probably die of hypothermia. It’s been nice knowing you.
