farmerstrainingThe Matonyok Organization is actively involved in providing agroforestry training to communities, schools, and institutions to combat climate change. These trainings focus on integrating trees into agricultural systems, which helps improve biodiversity, enhance soil health, and increase carbon sequestration.

Agroforestry practices, such as planting trees alongside crops (intercropping) or integrating trees into grazing lands (silvopasture), offer multiple benefits. They not only help mitigate climate change by storing carbon but also improve local livelihoods by diversifying income sources and enhancing agricultural productivity

We provide comprehensive training programs to farmers, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to integrate agroforestry practices into their farms. These programs cover topics such as soil management, forestry, organic farming, and sustainable land-use practices.

Here are some common examples of agroforestry:

  1. Alley Cropping: Planting rows of trees or shrubs between rows of crops. This helps reduce soil erosion, improve soil fertility, and provide additional income from tree products.

  2. Silvopasture: Combining trees with pastureland where livestock graze. The trees provide shade and shelter for animals, improve pasture quality, and can be harvested for timber or fruit.

  3. Windbreaks: Planting trees or shrubs in lines to protect crops and soil from wind damage. Windbreaks can also provide habitat for wildlife and reduce water evaporation.

  4. Riparian Buffers: Planting trees and shrubs along waterways to protect water quality by filtering runoff, reducing erosion, and providing habitat for aquatic and terrestrial species.

  5. Forest Farming: Cultivating high-value crops like mushrooms, herbs, or fruits under the canopy of an existing forest. This practice utilizes the shade and microclimate provided by the forest.

  6. Homegardens: Small-scale agroforestry systems around homes that combine trees, shrubs, and crops. These gardens can provide food, medicine, and other resources for the household.

We organize tree planting campaigns to restore and protect degraded lands, enhance biodiversity, and mitigate climate change

incomegenWe support farmers in identifying and implementing agroforestry systems that promote diversification of crops and income sources. By integrating high-value, market-oriented agroforestry practices, we aim to enhance economic resilience and reduce poverty levels.

img 2100We prioritize engaging with local communities, ensuring their active participation in project planning and implementation. By fostering a sense of ownership and inclusiveness, we empower communities to take charge of their sustainable development

PictureMatonyok’s vision places education at the zenith of our objectives and projects. Matonyok works with various groups and individuals in the pastoralists’ communities to propagate development in political, economic and social aspects of life. From delivering civic education to the public to promoting best agricultural and livestock rearing practices, Matonyok is continuously drawing attention to its priority of ensuring members of pastoralists’ communities have access to quality and wholesome education. Matonyok continues to promote adult literacy in the region by piquing interest of community members and providing resources where possible to enable the same. We also focus on promoting education on best agricultural practices to the pastoralists-turned farmers especially in Loitoktok sub-county. Our engagement in addressing poverty by supporting various groups have seen an increase in school enrollment due to available resources to pay school fees.

PicturePastoralists’ communities are one of the most marginalized in Kenya and despite efforts by the government to recognize their needs, there still exists forms of social injustices that continue to discriminate these communities from the national development agenda. Matonyok has taken a front row in educating communities on the value of public participation and where possible helped them actively advocate for their rights in either county or national government level. We combine education with advocacy as a sustainable approach to achieving our mission.

PictureAs a servant of the communities, we are constantly aware of the effects environmental mismanagement and climate change can and has had on the livelihoods of our target group. The increasingly changing climatic conditions have necessitated for Matonyok to participate actively in promoting effective and sustainable environment use. We are using the gains of education and advocacy to empower communities on natural resource management which has seen an increase in conservation efforts from planting indigenous trees and fruit forest to advancing education on water and sanitation.
